Prepare for your first show with NSHO!

NSHO is a great place to show and grow. Year after year people of all ages and experience levels join us for show weekends full of family friendly fun and competition. We understand that going to your first show may be intimidating, so here are some great tips to get you started off on the right hoof.

  1. Make sure to get your horse’s coggins pulled well in advance! It’s standard practice to pull and present a negative coggins test when you arrive at any show, and depending on the time of year, it can take anywhere between 2-6 weeks to get your results back! So if you’re interested in showing, contact your local large animal vet to schedule a visit early.

  2. Take a look at our By-Laws. Depending on the age, experience level, and earnings of both you and your horse, you may be subject to different rules or exceptions. Please read them carefully so you’re not surprised when you get here. There’s also some great example patterns so you can study well ahead of the show!

  3. Health exams for out of state horses. Are you travelling to us from outside of the state? While horses from Wisconsin are not technically required to have a veterinary health exam prior to showing in Minnesota, it is always good practice to have one pulled anyways. Let’s stay both safe and bio-secure - check with your local vet for more information.

  4. Fill out your paperwork ahead of time! Fill out the GOOGLE FORM to the right and email your coggins to northernstockhorse@gmail.com.

  5. Packing the trailer. All competitors are required to wear a cowboy hat or helmet, boots, and a long sleeve collared shirt. You will be required to provide your own feed/hay and buckets for water. Water is available on site for horses. There is a food stand on site providing snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, so don’t forget to pack some cash in case you have a snack attack.
